For Sale: 1978 BMW R80 in O'Fallon, Illinois

Gateway Classic Cars of Indianapolis is proud to present this rare 1978 BMW R80/7 Motorcycle. Powering this is the 800cc engine and 5-speed manual transmission. Both were rebuilt 1,800 miles ago. Restored right down to the frame which is rust free. The frame was powder coated. The instrument pod was restored by a specialist company in Michigan. It has new bearings, seals and gears and got a slightly higher ratio in 5th gear for more relaxed cruising (speed limit was 55 in 1978!). Rebuilt the carburetors, polished and re-laced both wheels with stainless steel spokes and replaced the wheel bearings. Also, rebuilt the cylinder heads with hardened valve seats and replaced the original iron cylinders with 1984 nikasil ones. The alternator was replaced and upgraded to a higher capacity. The ignition system was replaced with a modern electronic upgrade. The starter is new and upgraded. The saddle is a new Corbin and it sits in a cowl from an RS model, but a new, correct BMW sourced "bench" seat for two up riding is included. There are countless BMW sourced new replacement parts including: the fuel tank, main and secondary wiring harnesses, literally all rubber and chrome parts and all the cables and controls. The front brakes are upgraded to a period correct dual disk system using new BMW parts - master cylinder and the outer forks - to support the rebuilt calipers. The brake lines are new stainless steel. Added period correct additional instruments and replaced the handlebars and cables with new ones in the European style that are lower than the mini-ape hangers that were standard on US models. The clutch, oil pump and timing chain and gears are new. The steering head bearings were replaced, and the forks rebuilt with all new internals. Original and correct BMW hard side cases with all the latches and locks/keys working fine. The exhaust system is OE style but aftermarket stainless steel. The bike was professionally painted with a modern Chevrolet color. The tires are new Michelin Pilot Activs. There are a lot of small details like the audible reminder on the turn signal, an owner's manual and an original, nice tool kit and air pump. Also, a period correct accessory power socket on the frame making it easy to keep on the battery tender or to plug in heated clothing or whatever.
